The Dangers of Vagueness in Modern Technological Societies
Grasping Complexity in the Metaverse Economy
The arrival of the Internet raised high hopes for the democratization of information, the empowerment of individuals, global collaboration without borders, the reduction of economic inequalities between small businesses and large institutions, and unprecedented freedom of expression. Web 1.0, with its one-way information display model, was a first step. Web 2.0 introduced a participatory revolution, allowing users to contribute and modify online content. However, Web 2.0 failed to deliver on these promises.
Far from creating a decentralized and equitable ecosystem, it has sacrificed crucial ideals, such as privacy, economic inclusivity and transparency, in favour of short-term profits. Opportunities for collaboration and emancipation have been supplanted by widespread surveillance and massive commercial exploitation. These abuses illustrate a recurring phenomenon: great technological promises, blurred in their execution, often mask opaque intentions.
In the field of new technologies, company bosses are often starry-eyed. Let’s keep in mind the Bible’s teachings on this subject: ‘Matthew 7:15-16 ‘Beware of false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inside they are ravening wolves. You will know them by their fruits.’
